Supervisors report

The caregivers in our sponsorship program go to great lengths to help children and families in need. We have been working successfully with most of them for decades. What they report moves and motivates us time and again to help the poorest.

Courage for humanity

The tireless efforts of those responsible at our partner institutions in developing countries are admirable. Together with the sponsored children and their families, they do outstanding work. Each and every one of them is indispensable.

"I'm already old and have achieved a lot. It has always been moving to see how hard-hearted people have allowed themselves to be softened. I think you can achieve anything you set your mind to. But it takes a lot of patience and you have to set a good example. According to the true saying: 'The word thunders, the example carries away.

"What motivates me to do social work? I think it's the bitter experience of having been an orphan myself. I was taken into an orphanage when I was six months old. It was terrible to go through life alone. I owe everything I have become to the care of the nuns in the home. Today I look after orphaned children myself."

"The buildings were 3.5 meters under water during the hurricane. All around, people were climbing onto the roofs of their houses. Some mothers lost their babies in the raging floods. When the water receded from the grounds of the social center, 272 truckloads of mud had to be removed."

"My father worked in a bakery and my mother was illiterate. I had to rely on other children giving me pencils and exercise books to get by at school. That shaped me. We are all different, imperfect, incomparable. But everyone can be a source of happiness for others."

"The fighting between the legalists and the soldiers of the transitional government is costing many people their lives every day. Assassinations of members of the former government and arbitrary arrests are on the increase. At night we wake up to gunshots and loud screams. Our misfortune is great. Schools are often closed for days on end."

"When our former President Abdul K., now deceased, was dealing with children, he used to advise them to dream every day. We all dream countless dreams, but only a few become reality. The dream of Emmaus Children's Aid came true. Without this dream, the dreams of thousands of children would have been futile."
